BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell Fighting Camels dropped their CAA opener to Delaware, 10-8, on a rainy Friday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell now sits at 16-5 (0-1), and the Blue Hens improved to 10-10 and 1-0 in conference play.
The Camels got out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Dylan Koontz brought two across with an RBI single, and Andrew Schuldt scored Koontz with a deep RBI double to right center field.
Delaware scored two in the second inning. Jake Dunion scored from second when he stole third and a throwing error allowed him to take home. Tyler Leach then came around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Campbell added their fourth run off an RBI single from Dalen Thompson to score Chandler Riley.
Delaware scored again in the top of the third with an RBI groundout. That was followed by a two-run homer from Bryce Greenly in the fourth to give the Blue Hens a 5-4 lead.
Lawson Harrill hit his first of two home runs on the day in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 5-5. Harrill now has nine home runs on the year, which is second on the team.
The Blue Hens went back up in the fifth with another RBI single, this one from Dunion.
The bottom of the fifth inning was broken up by a short rain delay. Riley made his way to first before the delay began. After the delay, Payton Howard singled and Harril hit his second homer of the day to give the Camels an 8-6 lead.
Delaware took the lead for good with a four-run seventh inning. Joey Loynd laced a solo home run, Leach hit a two-RBI double, and Aidan Kane hit an RBI single to right.
Knipp came on in relief with two outs in the seventh. He finished the game, going 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. He allowed zero hits and no walks as he faced the minimum.
Starter Zach Sabers went 4.0 innings and recorded four strikeouts, four earned runs, four hits and two walks. He was not credited with a decision.
Eli Atiya of Delaware earned the win in relief of starter Tyler August, and Anthony Gubitosi was credited with his third save of the season.
