DURHAM, N.C. – Campbell baseball was unable to hold on against No. 11 Duke on the road, falling to the Blue Devils 11-1 Tuesday evening at Jack Coombs Field.
Campbell now sits at 17-7, and Duke improves to 18-7.
Starter Cole Peschl had a solid outing for the Camels. He went 4.1 innings with six strikeouts, five hits and two walks.
Duke scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth off Peschl. Zac Morris doubled down the line in right field to score Chase Krewson.
Jeremy Wiegman replaced Peschl on the mound and recorded the final two outs in the bottom of the fifth by inducing a 6-4-3 double play.
The Camels responded quickly with a run in the top of the sixth. Peyton Bonds began the inning with a hard-hit single that bounced out of the third baseman's glove. Chandler Riley followed that with a walk, and Lawson Harrill moved Bonds to third with a deep flyout to right field.
Campbell's small ball proved effective, as Payton Howard laid a sac bunt down the first base line to score Bonds.
Wiegman came back to the mound and kept the bases clear with two strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth. The Camels followed that with some traffic on the bases in the top of the seventh. Andrew Schuldt and Charlie Meglio were on the corners with two outs, but the team couldn't bring them home.
The Blue Devils broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the seventh and four in the eighth. Morris singled through the left side for his second RBI of the day. Ben Miller then hit a three-run home run to left. They scored two more on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-1.
In the eighth inning, AJ Gracia scored two with a bases-loaded single, Logan Bravo brought one across with a sac fly, and Gracia scored after a Campbell error.
