RALEIGH, N.C. – The Campbell Camels scored four runs in the 12th inning to lift themselves over N.C. State, 11-7, Tuesday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Braeden O'Shaughnessy delivered the hit that proved the difference. With one out and runners on second and third, he hit a line drive to center field. The defender initially had the ball in his glove, but it bounced out when he hit the ground. Both runners came around to score to put the Camels up by two.
O'Shaughnessy advanced to third on his hit, and he came around to score on an RBI groundout from Peyton Bonds. With two outs, the Camels went walk, single, walk to load the bases before Reed Stallman was hit by a pitch to score the fourth run in the inning.
Drew Siegner pitched the final three innings to earn the win (3-1). He allowed only one hit in those innings, recording three strikeouts.
The Camels (24-11) were first on the scoreboard in the third inning with a solo home run from Charlie Meglio to left field (354 feet). The knock was Meglio's fifth of the season.
Campbell struck again in the fourth inning. With two outs and a runner on second, NC State made the first pitching change of the night. Dalen Thompson stole third, and Andrew Schuldt was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners.
Meglio singled through the left side, scoring Thompson, and advancing Schuldt to second. The Camels loaded the bases with another walk, forcing another pitching change, before recording the third out of the inning.
The Wolfpack (20-14) scored one in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch, but left the bases loaded without doing any more damage.
In the bottom of the fifth, NC State had runners on the corners with no outs when Campbell brought Jackson Roberts out of the bullpen. He retired the next three batters to keep the Camels ahead, 2-1.
Roberts replaced Zach Sabers on the mound, who recorded five strikeouts and one walk in four-plus innings. He allowed only the one earned run and left the game with the lead intact.
The Camels carried the momentum from the defensive side over to the offense in the top of the sixth. Thompson singled up the middle on the first pitch of the inning.
Reed Stallman then took his 3-1 pitch over the bullpen in left center for his third home run in the past four games. The ball traveled 418 feet on its way to giving Campbell the 4-1 advantage.
State added one more in the seventh, thanks to a solo home run from Alec Makarewicz.
In the top of the eighth inning, State turned what would have been an inning-ending double play, but the Camels challenged the call, and the call was overturned as Schuldt beat the throw to first.
With two outs, Meglio singled to right, then Max Weller hit an opposite-field home run to right center for his first long ball of the year (394 feet). The three-run homer gave Campbell a 7-2 lead.
The Wolfpack would go on to score four runs in the home half of the eighth inning to make it a 7-6 game. Later, in the ninth, Eli Serrano III hit a game-tying home run to left field. The Wolfpack loaded the bases in the ninth but were unable to bring in the winning run.
Neither team did significant damage in the 10th and 11th innings before Campbell rallied for four in the 12th.
The Camels have now won three of the past four matchups against the Wolfpack.
