HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Campbell dropped the first game in their series against CAA opponent Hofstra, 11-7, Friday afternoon at University Field.
The Camels (24-12, 6-7 CAA) opened the scoring in the third inning. Braeden O'Shaughnessy took the first pitch of the frame over the wall in left for a solo home run.
With runners on first and second, Dalen Thompson hit an RBI single through the left side to bring home Chandler Riley and make it 2-0.
Lawson Harrill made it 3-0 in the fifth inning with his 15th home run of the season.
Hofstra (13-24, 4-9 CAA) took charge in the bottom of the fifth with seven runs on nine hits. Four of those runs came across with two outs.
In the top of the sixth, Grant Knipp hit a solo home run to left field in his first game back after missing the previous 13 games due to injury. It was his team-leading 16th home run of the season.
The Camels scored another two in the seventh to cut the deficit to one. With the bases loaded, Charlie Meglio hit a sharp ground ball to the second baseman who made a diving stop. The shortstop was unable to field the flip over for the force out at second base, and the baserunners on third and second to begin the play came across to score.
The Pride scored two more in the seventh and two in the eighth inning to take an 11-6 lead moving to the final frame.
Andrew Schuldt hit a solo home run in the ninth inning with one out, but he was the only Camel to reach base.
