FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Campbell's record-breaking first inning paced the way as the Camels defeated the Charlotte 49ers, 13-9, Tuesday night at Segra Stadium.
The Camels (20-8) scored 12 runs in the first inning, the most in program history for the first frame. It's tied for the most runs in a single inning since 2010, matching the second inning effort against Presbyterian on March 27, 2022 (36-4 victory).
Starter Cole Peschl took the mound in the top of the first inning and struck out the side, in order, to set the early tone leading to the record-tying frame.
Peyton Bonds lead off the bottom of the first with a home run to left field, his third long shot in the four games since being moved to the leadoff spot. Payton Howard singled through the left side before Lawson Harrill homered in his second-straight at-bat across two games to make it 3-0.
Dalen Thompson became the third Camel to hit a home run in the first four batters with his seventh of the season. The following three batters safely reached base, then Braeden O'Shaughnessy reached on an error from Charlotte. Reed Stallman scored on the play.
Chandler Riley drew a walk to score a run before Bonds recorded the first out of the inning in his second at-bat. One more run came around on a single from Howard, followed by a hit-by-pitch RBI from Harrill.
With the bases still loaded and one out, Thompson hit a bases-clearing double to left for his fourth RBI in the frame. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Thompson came home to score on a sac fly from Stallman to record the 12th run in the inning.
Charlotte (13-16), who used three different pitchers in the first inning, scored one run in the top of the second with an RBI single from Reid Haire.
The Camels answered with another run in the third inning with back-to-back doubles from Bonds and Howard.
The 49ers scored one run in the fifth and one in the sixth with solo home runs from Juan Correa and Shane Taylor.
Peschl recorded a quality start for the Camels, throwing six strong innings. He tied his season-high with 10 strikeouts and allowed only three runs on six hits. His record now moves to 2-1 on the year.
After a scoreless seventh, Charlotte added two runs in the eighth inning on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Rene Lastres.
The 49ers followed that up with four runs in the ninth inning. After Jacob Goolsby tripled off the wall in right, Spencer Nolan grounded out to third for the RBI. Noach Furcht hit an RBI single, and Johnny Sutryk hit a two-run homer to left field.
