Camels hit five home runs, defeat No. 6 Duke 18-4 in seven innings

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell baseball (26-13) hit five home runs, three off the bat of Lawson Harrill, in an 18-4 seven inning victory over No. 6 Duke (29-12), Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

Harrill recorded seven RBI, which is tied for fifth-most in program history. This is the second time this season a Camel has hit three home runs in a game, as Grant Knipp did so March 10 against Bucknell.

Harrill opened the scoring with a two-run shot in the first inning. The blast was his 16th of the season, tying Knipp for the team lead at the time.

After Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a sac fly in the second, Knipp then hit his 17th homer of the season to take the team lead once again with his three-run shot.

Two batters later, Harrill hit his second home run of the day, a solo shot to left.

The Camels scored five more runs on just one hit in the third inning to extend their lead to 12-0. Andrew Schuldt and Charlie Meglio were both hit-by-pitches to begin the frame, and Peyton Bonds reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with one out.

Schuldt scored on a wild pitch. O'Shaughnessy worked a full count walk, and Knipp was then hit by a pitch. With two outs, Harrill came to the place and blasted his third home run in as many plate appearances, this one a grand slam to center field.

Simon Bargo was given the start on the designated bullpen day for the Camels, and he went three-plus innings while giving up only two hits and one earned run.

The Blue Devils scored their first run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly after putting runners on the corners with no outs. Will Palmer came to the mound and induced three straight fly balls to right field, limiting the damage to just one.

The bottom of the frame saw the second three-run home run by the Camels, this one from Charlie Meglio that cleared the wall in left center field.

Duke would score twice more in the fifth inning and once in the sixth by way of two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly to deep center field.

Campbell added three more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bonds recorded his second hit of the night with an RBI triple to the gap in right center field, and Meglio scored from first. O'Shaughnessy walked and Knipp was hit by a pitch for the second time on the night to load the bases.

Dylan Koontz came to the plate and hit a weak ground ball to second base, but he was able to race down the line and beat the throw to avoid the double play, scoring Bonds and advancing O'Shaughnessy to third.

Koontz attempted to steal second, forcing a throw down by the catcher. O'Shaughnessy broke to home on the throw, forcing an errant throw back to the plate from the second baseman.

Ethan Snyder pitched the sixth and Garret Kangas pitched the seventh inning for the Camels to close out the game. Each allowed only one hit, and Kangas recorded two strikeouts in the final frame.
