Camels take opening game against College of Charleston

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell baseball won their second Friday conference game of the year, toppling College of Charleston, 11-5, Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Camels (27-13, 8-8 CAA) scored four runs in the fifth and eighth innings to propel themselves over the Cougars (29-11, 12-4), who entered the contest tied for first place in the conference standings.

Charleston scored once in the first inning with a blooper to short center field. They scored again in the top of the third on an RBI single through the left side to take a 2-0 lead.

Campbell took the lead in the bottom of the frame when Lawson Harrill doubled down the left field line to score Grant Knipp. Dalen Thompson and Reed Stallman hit back-to-back sac flies to put the Camels ahead, 3-2.

Charleston tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt with runners on first and third.

The Camels took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Dylan Koontz started the scoring with a solo home run to center field, his fourth of the season. Harrill and Thompson drew back-to-back walks, then Stallman doubled down the line in right field to score Harrill and move Thompson to third.

Andrew Schuldt drew a walk to load the bases, and Charlie Meglio followed that with an infield single to move everybody up one base. Peyton Bonds hit the third sac fly of the night to bring across one more in the frame.

Starting on the mound for the Camels was Cole Peschl, who went six innings, allowing only two earned runs on six hits. He recorded three strikeouts in the win to move him to 3-3 on the year.

The Camels chased Charleston starter Jake Brink in just 4.1 innings and seven earned runs, giving him just his second loss this season.

Jeremy Wiegman pitched a scoreless seventh inning, and Garret Kangas recorded the first two outs in the eighth. Jackson Roberts entered the game with the tying run at the plate and recorded a strikeout to end the eighth.

Campbell's offense came through with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to create more separation. After the first two batters recorded outs, the next five batters reached base.

Koontz drew a walk, Harrill doubled, and Thompson walked to load the bases. Stallman worked a four-pitch walk to drive in Koontz, and Schuldt followed that up with a bases-clearing double to center field.

The Cougars added one more with a leadoff home run in the ninth, but Roberts retired the following three batters to earn his second save this year.

The top of the Camel lineup was strong, as Knipp, Koontz, and Harrill each recorded two hits. The defense turned two double plays to help their pitchers, and the bullpen did not allow their two inherited runners to score.
