Campbell ends losing streak, splits doubleheader with Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Campbell and Monmouth split their double header on Saturday at MU Baseball Field. The Hawks won the first game, 8-7, and the Camels took the second by a score of 5-2.

The Camels (28-21, 9-14 CAA) ended an eight-game losing streak with the victory in Game Two, while Monmouth (17-26, 10-13 CAA) now sits just one game ahead of Campbell with the rubber match to be played tomorrow.

Game 1

Campbell opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning. With two runners on and two outs, the top of the lineup hit three consecutive RBI singles all to shallow right field.

Monmouth added one run in the bottom of the second with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch after drawing three walks in the frame.

Cole Peschl settled down after the tough inning, allowing only two hits in the next four innings.

Campbell added another two runs in the top of the sixth, thanks to a two-run homer by catcher Andrew Schuldt. The long ball was his seventh of the year, and his RBI total rose to 36.

Monmouth came back with one of their own in the bottom of the frame. Phil Stahl doubled down the left field line, then advanced to third on a groundout to the left side. He would come in to score on a wild pitch, but the threat ended there.

The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, 6-5, with two two-run home runs from James Harmstead and Austin Denlinger. The second came after a Campbell error that would have been the third out to end the inning.

Campbell came back to lead, 7-6, in the top of the ninth with RBI from Dylan Koontz and Dalen Thompson.

The lead would not last, as Monmouth came back to win in walk-off fashion in the ninth inning. The first two batters reached on a single and a hit-by-pitch. Harry Padden laid down a sacrifice bunt on the third base side to move the runners, and a throwing error by Campbell to first base allowed both baserunners to score, giving Monmouth the 8-7 victory.

Game 2

Monmouth took the lead in the second inning with a two-out RBI single by Joey DeMucci. It was the third hit in the first two innings off starter Zach Sabers.

The Camels responded with five runs in the top of the third. Reed Stallman brought across the first run with a sacrifice bunt with runners at the corners. Harrill and Koontz reached on a walk and hit-by-pitch to load the bases with two outs.

D. Thompson hit into an infield error, bringing in two runs. Braeden O'Shaughnessy then singled to left to score the final two runs of the frame.

Sabers locked down the Monmouth lineup after the second inning. He allowed no baserunners in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

In the sixth, the Hawks had second and third with no outs, but Sabers recorded outs on the next three batters. He then retired the side in order in the seventh for the fourth time in five innings.

With two outs in the eighth and two runners on base, Garret Kangas replaced Sabers on the mound and recorded a ground out to end the inning.

Packy Bradley-Cooney entered the game in the ninth inning and recorded his fifth save of the season. After forcing a ground out from the first batter, he walked and hit a batter to put two guys on base. Bradley-Cooney then forced a fly out to left for the second out before striking out the final batter looking.
