Camels pitch first shutout of season, claim series against Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. –  The Campbell Fighting Camels recorded their first shutout of the season, defeating the Monmouth Hawks, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at MU Baseball Field.

Campbell (29-21, 10-14 CAA) leaned on their pitching for the second consecutive game, allowing only five hits in the series-deciding victory.

The Camels were unable to take advantage of runners on base early, leaving five runners on base over the first two innings. They followed that up by going down in order in the third and fourth innings.

Similarly, Monmouth (17-27, 10-14 CAA) had only two hits in the first four frames, as Nate Brittain had four strikeouts on 63 pitches.

Reed Stallman broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to center field, his 13th long ball of the season.

Braeden O'Shaughnessy added another with a lead-off solo home run in the sixth to give the Camels a 2-0 lead.

Stallman launched his second solo shot of the day in the seventh to make it three consecutive innings with solo home runs for the Camels. This one cleared the wall in right.

Jeremy Wiegman replaced Brittain to start the home half of the seventh inning. Brittain's day finished with six innings pitched, allowing only three hits and zero runs with seven strikeouts and only one walk. He earned his first collegiate victory for his efforts.

Wiegman struck out the first batter of the seventh, then allowed an infield hit. The runner was caught stealing second by catcher Andrew Schuldt, and Wiegman recorded the third out himself by catching a foul ball.

The Camels added three more runs in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 6-0. O'Shaughnessy led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Schuldt. O'Shaughnessy came across to score on an RBI single from Charlie Meglio.

Peyton Bonds singled and Stallman walked to load the bases with two outs. Lawson Harrill singled to left field, and Meglio and Bonds scored before Harrill was thrown out at second trying to extend the hit to a double.

Wiegman recorded the first out in the bottom of the frame before walking the second batter and giving way to Will Palmer. Palmer allowed a single, but he was able to strand the two baserunners with a flyout to center field and a popout to second base. As a whole, the Campbell pitching staff struck out 10 batters while only walking two.

The Camels did not add any runs in the top of the ninth inning, and Packy Bradley-Cooney came out and recorded the final three outs of the game with two strikeouts and a flyout to center field.
