Campbell takes first game against William & Mary, 9-5

BUIES CREEK, N.C. –  The Campbell Fighting Camels took the first game in the series against William & Mary by a 9-5 score, Thursday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Camels (30-21, 11-14 CAA) had six innings from starter Cole Peschl to help lead the way, as well as runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to power the victory.

The Tribe (29-23, 12-13 CAA) got the scoring started with one run in the first inning, but that would be the only time they led in the game.

Campbell got on the board in the third inning thanks to a two-run blast from Dylan Koontz. The lefty launched the ball off the top of the scoreboard in right field to put the Camels ahead.

The Camels scored another two runs in the fifth inning on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Schuldt.

Both teams scored one run in the sixth inning. Joe Delossantos singled up the middle to drive in Josiah Seguin for the Tribe. Koontz matched it with a bases loaded single to right field for his third RBI of the night, scoring Chandler Riley.

In his six innings, Peschl recorded four strikeouts and no walks. As a staff, Campbell's pitchers did not walk a batter for the second game of the season (4/19 at Hofstra).

Willaim & Mary scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5. The first two batters reached safely to be at second and third with no outs. Trey Christman reached on an error and scored Nate Goranson. A wild pitch scored Luca Trigiani, and Ben Parker hit a sac fly to center to bring home Christman.

The Camels took the lead right back in the bottom of the frame. After the first two batters recorded outs, Riley was hit by a pitch.

Peyton Bonds was next to bat, and after Riley stole second, Bonds hit a weak ball back up the middle. Bonds was able to beat the throw to first, and Riley rounded third and headed for home. After Bonds was called safe, the first baseman threw home. The throw beat Riley to the plate, but the catcher was unable to maintain possession of the ball through the tag, and Riley was safe.

Packy Bradley-Cooney came on to pitch in the eighth inning for the Camels. He allowed only one hit in the final two frames, a single by Goranson, on way to his sixth save of the season.

Campbell added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with RBI hits from Braeden O'Shaughnessy, Charlie Meglio and Bonds. The Camels recorded 17 hits on the night, which is the third most the Tribe has allowed all season.

Bradley-Cooney ended the ninth inning by retiring the side in order with a groundout and two strikeouts.
