Campbell holds William & Mary to two hits, wins 10-2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell baseball allowed only two hits to William & Mary, and Reed Stallman hit a grand slam, on their way to a 10-2 victory, Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Camels (31-21, 12-14 CAA) had six innings from starter for the second consecutive game, this time from Zach Sabers (6-0). After allowing a lead off home run, Sabers did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. He allowed only five baserunners during his time on the mound.

Two hits allowed is tied for the lowest amount the Campbell pitching staff has given up this year, hitting the same mark in a win over N.C. A&T on April 7.

The Tribe's (29-24, 12-14 CAA) Henry Jackson launched the lead off homer to center field before the next nine batters were retired in order.

Campbell's offense was also slow to get going, recording just two hits in the first four innings. Then, they erupted with four runs in the fifth and four in the sixth inning to break the game open.

After the first batter for the Camels struck out to start the home half of the fifth, two walks and an infield single loaded the bases. Lawson Harrill hit a ground ball to the first baseman, who threw home to get the force out. The throw was errant, and Chandler Riley and Peyton Bonds both scored on the play.

With runners on second and third, Dylan Koontz hit a sacrifice fly to center, and Dalen Thompson followed that up with an RBI double.

The Tribe scored their second run of the game in the sixth inning on a wild pitch.

The Camels answered back with four more runs in the sixth. Once again, the first batter was struck out, and that was followed by two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Stallman swung at the first pitch he saw and sent it 410 feet over the wall in center field. The long ball was Stallman's 15th of the season.

Campbell scored the eight runs on Tribe starter Nate Knowles (7-3), who had only allowed six extra base hits (two home runs) in 67.2 innings of work prior to tonight's game. Knowles is the reigning (and three-time) CAA Pitcher of the Week.

The Camels went to their bullpen to start the seventh inning. After the first two batters were walked, Garret Kangas came in and struck out the side, leaving the bases loaded.

Andrew Schuldt added the final two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-RBI single to score Thompson and Braeden O'Shaughnessy.

Pitcher Cooper Clark made his return to the mound in the eighth inning and allowed just one baserunner in the final two frames. He recorded three strikeouts, which included the final two batters to shut the door.
