Harrill sets career home runs record, Camels fall to #11 Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Lawson Harrill recorded his 51st career home run to set a new program record, but the Camels fell to No. 11 North Carolina, 16-10, Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium.

The Camels (27-20) recorded 19 hits, their highest total of the season. Every player in the lineup recorded a hit, and four Camels had multi-hit outings.

Carolina (36-11) scored seven of the final eight runs to pull away late, powered by six runs in the sixth inning.

Dalen Thompson put the Camels on the board in the first inning with an RBI single to score Harrill. The pitch previously, Harrill stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error to put himself in position to score on the single through the left side.

Carolina took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-RBI single from designated hitter Alberto Osuna.

Rain began to fall in the bottom of the second, as the Tar Heels added another two runs with a bases loaded two-RBI single by Casey Cook. Garret Kangas took the mound in relief of starter Simon Bargo, as the Camels worked through their planned bullpen day.

Anthony Donofrio added another two runs with a two-out two-RBI double to left center to make it 6-1 in favor of the Tar Heels.

The rain subsided by the top of the third, and Campbell added another run thanks to a sacrifice fly from Thompson for his second RBI of the day. Chandler Riley hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Dylan Koontz.

The Tar Heels scored once more in the bottom of the third with an RBI double by Colby Wilkerson.

The Camels answered once again with another two runs in the top of the fourth. Peyton Bonds led off the inning with a solo home run that curled around the foul pole in left field. Later in the frame, Thompson knocked in his third RBI of the day with a single through the right side, scoring Reed Stallman.

Jeremy Wiegman started on the mound in the bottom of the fourth, and he allowed only one baserunner in the frame.

The Camels scored two-plus runs for the third straight inning in the fifth. After the first two batters struck out, Jackson Thompson homered in his first start of the season. Bonds followed that with an infield single, and Stallman advanced him to third with a single to right field.

Harrill's third hit of the day, a single to center, scored Bonds and moved Stallman to third and tied the game, 7-7. Koontz then hit an infield single to the shortstop for the fifth consecutive two-out hit in the inning, putting Campbell ahead by one.

The Tar Heels took back the lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single and a sac fly, before Drew Siegner took his turn on the mound and retired the next two batters to get out of the inning.

The back-and-forth nature of the game continued to into the sixth inning, as Campbell tied it at 9-9 with a Bonds single to score Braeden O'Shaughnessy with two outs. The hit was Bonds's fourth of the night, the most he's had in a single game and 10th multi-hit game of his season.

The Tar Heels opened the game up with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Their first batter reached and advanced to third on a fielding error in the bottom of the sixth, then came around to score on an RBI single. Two batters later, they recorded an RBI single, RBI double, RBI groundout, and a two-run homer by Vance Honeycutt.

Through six innings, the two teams had combined for 29 hits and 24 runs. The Camels had 15 hits, tied for third most in a game this season.

Neither team scored in the seventh inning. The Camels only had one baserunner in the eighth, and the Tar Heels added one run on a wild pitch. Cy Cox, Will Palmer, and Packy Bradley-Cooney each pitched one of the final three innings.

Harrill opened the ninth with his record-setting home run, 409 feet to left center. It was his 23rd of the season, surpassing his total from last year when he was named Big South Player of the Year. With seven games remaining in the regular season, he sits four home runs shy of surpassing Campbell's single season record.
