BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell women's soccer defeated in-state foe North Carolina State, 2-1, for the first time in program history Thursday evening at Eakes Athletics Complex.
In the previous 17 matchups against the Wolfpack (0-2-1), the Fighting Camels (1-1-1) had seen just two draws and 15 defeats, including the largest margin of defeat in program history when the teams played in 1992.
Campbell took the lead in the 13th minute with a goal from Kaleigh Backlund, who scored the tying goal in the final minute of Sunday's match against George Mason.
Backlund was on the receiving end of a cross from Caitlyn Boucher into the box, but the ball fell to the goalkeeper as State tried to clear it off the line. A defender cleared it off the line directly into the path of Backlund, and the ball careened into the back of the net.
Campbell took the 1-0 lead into halftime, thanks in large part to a big save by Sierra Vance against Abi Hugh in the 21st minute. Tonight was the first time since 2004 that Campbell held a lead at any point against NC State.
The Camels extended their lead to 2-0 for the second consecutive match in the 60th minute. Kendall Lincoln caught up to a ball down the sideline and sent a low cross into the box in the direction of Alyssa Tucker. Tucker made a play on the ball in the box but was taken down by Taylor Chism and awarded a penalty kick. She took the shot herself and calmly sent it to the upper right corner of the goal.
The Wolfpack scored in the 72nd minute by way of Chism, which was the first of the season for NC State. More chances came for the Wolfpack in the final 15 minutes, but none found their way on target.
The Campbell defense held up under significant pressure from the visitors the rest of the contest, who outshot the Camels 23-6 and created 13 corner kicks against Campbell's zero.
