BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell scored in each half and went on to defeat NC Wesleyan 2-0 Sunday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.
Campbell (2-0) went in front just five minutes into the match when Filipe Matos set up Lotem Ben Dov for a right-footed shot into the right center of goal. Later in the 73rd minute, Lillian Fichelle was brought down after a tackle inside the box. A senior from Raleigh, De Leon buried the ensuing penalty kick.Â
"Another learning opportunity for our group," said head coach Dustin Fonder. "Its always good to learn when you win. We're going to clean some things up before Old Dominion but I think this is a dedicated group. We will challenge this week and they will rise to the challenge!"
Freshman goalkeeper Max Leviton made two saves in the first half to secure his first career shutout between the posts.Â
The Camels saw several chances to extend the lead go unrewarded throughout the match. Matos nearly capitalized on a misplay by the Battling Bishops' keeper but missed just off the bottom right of goal. In the second half, Ugo Bertelli saw his shot from outside the box miss low to the left while Evans Dapaah's shot from the penalty marker was saved.
Campbell outshot the Battling Bishops 23-5, 8-2 in shots on target and took 16 corner kicks to none for the visitors. Rafael Farina finished with six saves in the NC Wesleyan nets.Â
Only Leviton and defenders Fichelle and Lossec played the full 90 minutes for the Camels who used eight substitutes, all of whom played at least 15 minutes.Â
Campbell wraps up its three-match home stand against Old Dominion on Thursday night at 7 PM on FloFC.
