CHARLESTON, S.C. – Campbell and Charleston Southern played to a 2-2 draw at CSU Soccer Field Thursday afternoon, as the former conference opponents met for the 20th time in series history.
The draw is just the second such result between the foes, as Campbell held a 15-3-1 advantage over the Buccaneers prior to today's meeting.
Charleston Southern (1-2-1) struck first in the 23rd minute, when Daniela Contreras converted a penalty shot for her second goal of the season.
The Camels (1-1-3) responded nearly immediately with a goal from Abby Connolly in the 24th minute. The freshman notched her second goal of the season to go along with one assist.
Fellow freshman Tyler Baughan also recorded her second goal of the young season, giving Campbell the lead in the 42nd minute from the penalty spot. The Camels are now 2-for-2 on penalty kicks this season.
The Bucs equalized in the 57th minute off the foot of Contreras once again. Her three goals on the year are the most by a Buccaneer, and she is the only individual on the team with multiple goals.
Campbell created multiple opportunities after, with two shots saved by goalkeeper Avery Mason and Adele Schwab hitting a shot off the left post in the 64th minute.
Campbell had a 13-9 shot advantage, but each team recorded seven efforts on frame. Sierra Vance notched five saves for the second consecutive game.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Jeff Gross
"We showed some better quality today, decent resilience, and as this team learns how to combine both we have a chance to compete at a higher level. This group of young women show they are willing to learn from each experience. They have to draw on that quicker in the midst of competition. Another set of quality games coming up will provide that opportunity."
