Camels drop two on opening day

WACO, TEXAS - Campbell dropped both matches on the opening day of the 2024 season. The Camels dropped the opener to Tulsa in straight sets, and lost the nightcap to Abilene Christian in four sets.

Match One Recap
The Camels dropped the season opener in straight sets to Tulsa.

Campbell dropped the opening set 25-17. After being tied at 13-13, a quick run by the Hurricane forced a CU timeout, but the Camels could never really get back into it. Gwen Wolkow led the way with four kills and five digs in the opening frame.

The Camels fell behind 7-1 early in the second set and never established a rhythm to close the gap, ultimately dropping the second 25-10. The offense struggled in the frame, tallying only three kills while committing seven errors.

Campbell hung tough in the third, but couldn't keep the match alive and dropped the third set 25-22. A late run forced a Tulsa timeout at 21-21, and the Hurricane made the most of it and closed out the match on a 4-1 run.

Victoria Tupy earned the start in her collegiate debut, while Haily Heytvelt and Maddie Lambers also made their debuts.

Riley Dean handled the responsibility of libero, as the first person to suit up in that role in four years after Claranne Fechter held the title during her tenure in Buies Creek.

The offense combined to hit -.033, the team's lowest mark since 2017, with 21 kills and 24 errors.

Gwen Wolkow posted team-highs for both kills (6) and digs (10), while Ashley Artura handed out a team-high 11 assists.

Match Two Recap
Campbell set the tone at the net to open the match. The front line posted seven blocks in the first set led by five from Hailey Heytvelt to push the Camels to the 25-17 win. Wolkow got off to another hot start with four kills in the first, including two of the finial three points.

ACU controlled the net in the second set with five blocks of their own in the frame to take it 25-21 and even the score at one set apiece.

The Wildcats took a 2-1 advantage thanks to a late surge in the third set. After the score was tied at 12-12, ACU pieced together a 9-1 run to take control en route to a 25-17 set win.

The Camels had another shot to keep things going and force a fifth set, trailing by only two points at 23-21, but once again didn't have the rally they needed and dropped the final set 25-22.

Despite the loss three Camels turned in double-double efforts. Abbie Tuyo led the way with 12 kills and 15 digs. Wolkow notched 10 kills and 14 digs, and Maddie Converse posted 13 assists and 10 digs.
