Camels fall in five sets to ECU

BUIES CREEK - The Camels fought from down to sets to force a fifth and deciding set but couldn't complete the comeback and fell in five to East Carolina Tuesday night in the home opener.

The loss drops Campbell to 2-5 this season while ECU remains undefeated, now at 7-0.

"I'm proud of the way our team fought tonight," head coach Greg Goral said. "That's a really good team with a lot of really good athletes. Forcing a fifth set from down 2-0 is something we can build on."

Campbell was outplayed in the first two sets, dropping those 25-10 and 25-14. Campbell was hitting -.062 to ECU's .307.

The Camels flipped a switch in the third though, downing the Pirates 25-22. Victoria Tupy provided a big spark in the frame with three kills and back-to-back solo blocks. Ashley Artura also came up with two big aces in the set to keep things alive.

The momentum stayed with the Camels through the fourth set, with the Camels pushing the lead to as many as nine. A charge by the Pirates forced a couple Campbell timeouts, but it wasn't enough, as Tupy was there to stop the run with the final point and force a fifth set.

The comeback effort ran out of gas in the fifth, as the Camels fell into an early 5-0 hole they couldn't dig out of and ultimately fell 15-7.

It was the tightest match ECU had played all season, having not played beyond four sets yet and dropped only two sets total on the year.

Abbie Tuyo and Aley Clent led the way with nine kills each. Maddie Converse handed out 18 assists, and Riley Dean collected 20 digs. Artura notched a new career high with four service aces.

ECU's front line was a force all night, finishing with 13 blocks. Fran McBride led all players with 16 kills on .448 hitting.

Campbell returns to action Friday at 6 p.m. against American on the first day of the Campbell Invitational. The Camels will face N.C. Central and Western Carolina the following day as part of the tournament.
