Camels come up short against American

BUIES CREEK - It was deja vu for the Camels, who once again rallied from down two sets only to fall in the fifth Friday night against American in the first match of the Campbell Invitational.

The loss drops the Camels to 2-6, while American improves to 9-1. Each of Campbell's last four matches have now gone to five sets, with CU going 2-2 in those contests.

Emily Campe turned in the best night of her career with 19 kills, blowing past her previous career-high 11. The senior added two blocks and two digs to her line as well.

It wasn't as slow a start as the Camels have seen, hanging neck-and-neck with the Eagles in the first two sets, dropping the first 25-20, and the second 25-22. The second featured a tremendous comeback effort that came up just short. CU trailed 20-9 before storming back to apply some pressure to the Eagles and cut the lead to only two at 23-21, but couldn't get any closer.

The Campbell defense stepped up against the team that came in leading the nation in kills in the third and fourth sets, holding American to hitting only .125 in each frame. Emily Campe was at her best during that stretch, with six kills in both the third and fourth sets, to help even the score at 2-2.

Campbell had a late edge in the fifth set at 13-12, but a service error and two blocks allowed the Eagles to close on a 3-0 run and hang on for the victory.

Abbie Tuyo joined Campe in double figures with 11 kills and five blocks, including three solo. Maddie Converse dished out 30 assists, and Riley Dean came up with 23 digs.

American had four players in double figures, led by Adelina Berisha's 21.

Campbell returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. against N.C. Central, and again at 6 p.m. against Western Carolina. Both matches will be streamed on FloVolleyball.
