Camels drop two on day two of Campbell Invitational

BUIES CREEK - Campbell went 0-2 on the second day of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Campbell Invitational, suffering four-set losses to both N.C. Central and Western Carolina.

The setbacks drop Campbell to 2-8 at the end of non-conference play.

N.C. Central Recap
The Camels jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead by taking the first set 25-23. CU trailed 17-10 in the frame but was able to battle back to earn an early advantage.

It was all Eagles from that point. NCCU had a similar lead midway through the second set, with Campbell having no answer that time around. Campbell had it's chance to retake the lead in the third set with things tied at 23-23 before the Eagles reeled off three kills in the final four points to take control of the match.

NCCU closed out the match by rolling to a 25-16 fourth set win. The Campbell offense struggled to get things going in the fourth, hitting a tick below zero in the set.

Abbie Tuyo led the way with 12 kills and a career-high 19 digs. Riley Dean and Ashley Artura added 18 digs each. Maddie Converse dished out a team-high 22 assists.

Western Carolina Recap
The second match was similar to the first of the day, with the Camels finding a hot start before ultimately falling in four sets. This time, Campbell was without both starting outside hitters Gwen Wolkow and Abbie Tuyo.

Campbell turned in arguably its best set of the season in the first, hitting a blistering .412 with 15 kills and only one error. Emily Campe got off to a hot start with six kills to pace the Camels to a 1-0 lead.

Things turned south in the following set, as Campbell hit -.129 in the second while Western hit .429 in a 25-7 win for the Catamounts.

The Camels drew closer, but never really threatened in the third or fourth sets, falling 25-16 and 25-19 in the final sets of the day.

Campe led the squad with 10 kills in the tournament finale. Dean collected 18 digs, and Converse a team-high 17 assists.

Looking Ahead
CAA play begins Saturday when the Camels welcome reigning CAA champion Delaware to Gore Arena for the first time. Both Saturday and Sunday's matches will be at 1 p.m.
