KINGSTON, R.I. – Devin Farrell combined for three touchdowns, leading Rhode Island over visiting Campbell 21-9 in the CAA opener for both teams Saturday at Meade Stadium.
URI improved to 2-1 overall, while Campbell fell to 1-2 in the first ever meeting between the Rams and Camels.
The Rams led 7-3 at the half, stopping the Camels on the goal line just before the break. URI struck first, taking advantage of a Campbell fumble in its own territory, using just four plays, capped off with a Greg Gaines TD reception from Devin Farrell with 4:42 to go in the first.
Connor Lytton's 34-yard field goal put Campbell on the board with 6:30 on the clock in the second before URI's goal line stand.
The Rams added to their lead with the opening drive of the second half, marching 77 yards on eight plays, capped by Farrell's 27-yard TD run. Farrell added a touchdown pass to Marquis Buchanan to give the Rams their largest lead at 21-3 with 4:59 to go in the third.
Sincere Brown added an eight-yard TD catch to make it 21-9 for the Camels with 6:30 to play.
Campbell outgained URI 348-247, including 211-140 through the air, but scored on two of its four redzone chances in the loss.
Farrell completed 14-of-21 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns, adding 44 yards rushing with another score. Shawn Harris, Jr. hauled in five catches for 58 yards, while Buchanan picked up 48 yards on four catches with a TD.
Defensively, Fredrick Mallay gathered 11 tackles for the Rams, while A.J. Pena recorded 10 tackles, including a pair of sacks.
Brown paced Campbell's offense with nine catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, while
Mike Chandler II rushed for a team-high 41 yards on 11 carries.
Chad Mascoe, Jr. also completed 22-of-31 passes for 155 yards, while Chandler connected on 6-of-8 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.
CJ Tillman posted 11 tackles, including a sack, one of four Campbell stops for loss.
Next up, the Camels will make their long-awaited home debut on September 21, hosting CAA foe Stony Brook at Barker-Lane Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. in the first of six home dates.
