CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Elias Arsvoll scored the only goal of the match as #19 Charlotte handed Campbell its first loss of the season Tuesday night at Transamerica Field.
The 49ers (4-0-2) have yet to allow a goal at home this season and extended its home winning streak to 10 matches dating back to last season. The Camels (4-1-3), who are receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll, were shutout for just the second time this season.
Both sides had several opportunities on goal in a scoreless first half. Charlotte had a strike from Ryan Dunn from inside the box blocked out of play by Jake Roberts in the sixth minute. Later in the 43rd minute, Dunn crossed into the box to Daniel Moore who put a header on frame forcing a save from Samy Slimi.
Less than a minute before halftime Teva Lossec had his shot on an empty net blocked from outside the box after a misplay from Charlotte keeper Leo Stritter.
The nationally-ranked 49ers broke the deadlock in the 60th minute as Slimi came out to make a save on a shot from Ben Fisher. The rebound went back to Fisher who tapped it to Arsvoll who fired a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
Campbell had a chance to even the game in the 71st minute as Luc Lavielle intercepted a ball near the top of the 49ers' box but missed to the left of goal.
Marco Wright had another opportunity in the 81st minute after dribbling around his defender at the top of the box for an open look on goal but missed high on his attempt.
Charlotte held an 18-8 advantage in shots, 8-3 on goal, and took 13 corners to just three for the Camels. Slimi made a season-high seven saves for Campbell.
The Camels take a week off between matches before returning to host UNCW in non-conference action next Tuesday at 7 PM.
