Camels and Seahawks battle to scoreless draw

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell battled UNCW to a scoreless draw in the 57th edition of the Cape Fear River Derby on Tuesday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

Slated as a non-conference matchup, Campbell (4-1-4) and UNCW (2-3-4) both earned its fourth draw of the season.

The Camels finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots, placing three attempts on goal to just one for the Seahawks, and had a 7-1 advantage on corners.

"It was a tough Derby game," said head coach Dustin Fonder following the match. "Their team is well coached and I thought we battled and matched their intensity. I thought we had enough chances to get one but we just couldn't get over the line today."

UNCW had an early look on goal in the 10th minute as a cross into the box was deflected to the top of the box for Bryan Miralrio who fired his shot off the top of the woodwork.

In the 17th minute, Marco Wright received a pass in the middle of the field, used a spin move to split both center back defenders and forced the UNCW keeper to make a diving stop on his shot from outside the box. Lotem Ben Dov had another look on goal in the 39th minute as his shot curled just over the top right corner and out of play.

The Seahawks added another shot off the crossbar in the 76th minute as Josef Hefele deflected a shot towards goal from Osei Gyamfi.

The closing moments of the game featured four blocked shots in a three minute span for the Camels. Teva Lossec provided the best chance of the four as he received a ball in front of the net and had his shot deflected away by a sliding Jake Shannon in the 86th minute.

Samy Slimi picked up his first third shutout of the season in goal for the Camels while Bennett Jones and Trey Smiley combined for the UNCW shutout.

The Camels lead the Cape Fear River Derby series 28-25-4 with Tuesday's match marking the first draw between both sides in Buies Creek.

Campbell returns to CAA action on Saturday at 11 AM on the road against Delaware.
