BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell Camels moved to 2-0 in CAA play with their largest win this season, a 7-0 victory over Hampton Sunday afternoon at Eakes Athletics Complex.
Forwards Kaleigh Backlund and Alyssa Tucker each scored two goals to lead the Camels (4-3-3, 2-0-0) over the Lady Pirates (3-6-1, 0-2-0), and Kendall Lincoln scored her second goal of the week.
Tucker and Backlund began the scoring in the 12th minute, as the two attackers scored just 23 seconds apart to put the Camels ahead by two. Tucker cleaned up some action in the box to score unassisted, and Backlund was aided by a cross in by Zahra Fepessi.
Backlund quickly scored her second of the match in the 26th minute off an assist from Natalie Darling, her second helper of the year. Backlund continues to lead the team in goals, now with six.
Just 38 seconds later, Lincoln slotted her left-footed shot past the keeper to give the Camels a 4-0 advantage.
That lead would carry through halftime, and it's the most goals scored in a half by the Camels this year.
Tucker's second goal came in the 52nd minute, assisted by Abby Connolly, as she looped a shot in from outside the box. Hampton keeper Avery John got a hand to it but was unable to keep it from crossing the goal line to give the Camels a 5-0 lead.
Emely Rubio scored her first goal of the season in dramatic fashion, directly off a corner kick in the 67th minute to score the Olimpico.
Campbell's final notch on the scoreboard came in the 87th minute off the boot of Darling. Darling's initial shot was blocked just outside the box, but the referee called a handball. Darling took the succeeding free kick and rocketed it straight past the keeper to the upper right corner.
The goal marked the first time since an 8-0 victory over Longwood in October 2022 that the Camels scored seven or more goals in a contest.
Sierra Vance played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Camels, and she came up with two saves on the day. In total, 18 field players saw more than 35 minutes of action for Campbell.
