BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell gave up two unanswered goals in the second half, as they fell to Stony Brook, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Eakes Athletics Complex.
The Camels fell to 4-4-3 and 2-1 in CAA action, and the Seawolves improved to 7-3-1 (2-1). The loss ended a three-match win streak for the Camels, and their streak of not allowing a goal came to an end at 375 minutes.
Kaleigh Backlund opened the scoresheet in the 28th minute off an assist from Emely Rubio. The goal was Backlund's seventh of the season and 21st of her career, moving her into a tie with Payton Ormsby (2013-16) for tenth place in program history.
Campbell took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Seawolves quickly tied it at 1-1 in the 50th minute. Sammy Hannwacker sent in a corner kick with her left foot, and Luciana Setteducate got her foot to the ball first, directing it into the back of the net.
Stony Brook carried the momentum until breaking the Camels' defense again in the 57th minute. Gabrielle Côté took the ball down the right side and dragged the ball back towards the front of the box, where Linn Beck was waiting to send the ball past the diving goalkeeper.
The Camels were able to force some pressure in the final 30 minutes, coming away with two corner kicks and two shots, but the Seawolves' defense held strong in the closing moments to come away with the win.
