Camels beat Queens in five sets

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Camels pulled off the reverse sweep to defeat Queens in five sets Sunday afternoon to close out the Wofford Invitational. After Queens hit roughly .300 through two sets, the Camel defense tightened things up and didn't allow the Royals to hit over .100 in any of the final three sets.

The win gets Campbell to 2-4 through two weekends of the season.

Campbell trailed by as many as seven in the first before cutting the deficit back to two points at 21-19, but couldn't complete the comeback to steal the first set, falling 25-22. Abbie Tuyo got off to a hot start with five kills on .500 hitting in the first frame.

The Royals went up 2-0 with a 25-16 second set. A 5-0 run in the middle of the set vaulted Queens ahead for good. Campbell hit .105 in the second to Queens' .333 mark.

Campbell kept the match alive in the third set, taking it 25-20. The Camels never trailed in the set as Gwen Wolkow led the way with four kills in the set.

The Camels forced a deciding set with another 25-20 win in the fourth. The Royals made a late push to make the score look closer than the set played, as Campbell led by as many as 12 at 22-10.

Campbell capped the comeback with a 15-10 fifth-set victory.  A timely 7-1 run took the Camels  from down one to leading 12-7, not leaving Queens enough time to mount a comeback and give Campbell the match.

Abbie Tuyo and Gwen Wolkow came up big on offense with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. The outside hitting duo both logged double-doubles, as Wolkow tied a career-high with 19 digs, and Tuyo added 11. Riley Dean posted a career-high 25 digs. Maddie Converse also logged a double-double with a team-high 26 assists and 13 digs.

The Camels return home for the home opener and a four-match homestand. The home opener is set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. against ECU. The weekend will feature the Fairfield Inn & Suites Campbell Invitational, where the Camels will take on NC Central, Western Carolina, and American across Friday and Saturday.

The Campbell front line came up big with 16 total blocks, the most since the team came up with 20 on Oct. 6, 2022 against Radford. Hailey Heyvelt and Aley Clent controlled the net with seven  blocks each. Three of Clent's were solo blocks.
