Camels fall late to Charleston

BUIES CREEK - Campbell was unable to overcome an off shooting night in a 67-61 loss to Charleston Thursday night in Gore Arena. The Camels went only 2-21 from downtown and 9-16 from the foul line in the loss.

The result leaves Campbell at 7-11, 2-3 in the CAA while Charleston improves to 14-4, 4-1.

Colby Duggan continued his stretch of excellent play and led the Camels in points (21), rebounds (6) and assists (4) on the night. The sophomore is now averaging 20.6 points per game through five CAA games.

Campbell got off to a quick start and led by seven points after six minutes thanks to some easy buckets with three early dunks. The Camels still struggled to shoot the ball and went 0-13 from distance in the first half as Charleston connected for four of them to take a 33-30 lead at the break.

The second half saw the Camels trail by as many as seven points, but had a run in them to go up by five points with five minutes to play. The game turned on its head with two minutes to, when Derrin Boyd hit back-to-back three-pointers to take the Cougars from down three to up three. Campbell wouldn't lead again, as a few empty possessions down the stretch led to a 67-61 final. 

Along with Duggan's game-high 21, Jasin Sinani scored 14 points, while Cam Gregory scored 10. 

Charleston was led by 15 points from both Deywilk Tavarez and Derrin Boyd thanks to three threes apiece. Lazar Djokovic and AJ Smith scored 11 and 10, respectively. Djokovic made his mark on the glass as well, hauling in 15 boards on the night in a double-double. 

The Camels are back in action Saturday at home against Monmouth for the Hall of Fame game. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. on FloCollege.
