Big second half lifts Campbell over Monmouth

BUIES CREEK - A big second half helped Campbell race past Monmouth 81-58 Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena. Tied at the half, the Camels outscored Monmouth 54-31 after halftime to cruise to the 23-point win.

The win moves Campbell to 8-11, 3-3 in the CAA. Monmouth drops to 5-14, 3-3 in the league.

Caleb Zurliene scored a career-high 21 points on 7-10 shooting, including a pair of triples and going 5-5 at the foul line. The graduate transfer bookended the game with an early poster dunk, and a tomahawk jam to put Campbell up 20 with two minutes to go.

It was an even and low-scoring game in the first half, with both teams shooting less than 40%. Monmouth led by as many as nine in the first, but Campbell responded with a 10-0 run to pull right back into the game. Zurliene had a game-high 11 points at the half as the teams went to the break tied 27-27.

The Camels hit the jets coming out of the locker room and led by eight by the first media timeout. Eric Van Der Heijden provided a lift in the second half with 10 points and six rebounds after halftime, including a pair of big three-pointers.

Campbell shot 63% from the floor in the second half, including 50% from the floor and a perfect 15-15 at the foul line. All of that led to Campbell's highest-scoring half of the season with 54 points in the second half as the Camels pulled away for the 81-57 win.

Nine different  Camels scored on the night with four in double figures. Zurliene led the way with 21 followed by Jasin Sinani (14), Colby Duggan (11), and Van Der Heijden (10). Nolan Dorsey just missed a double-double with nine points and a career-high 12 rebounds. He was active all over the court and also had two assists, three steals and a block.

Dorsey also drew the matchup on the CAA's leading scorer and nation's leading three-point shooter, Abdi Bashir Jr., holding him to 14 points on 6-23 shooting, including only 2-13 from distance. Monmouth was led in scoring by Madison Durr with 18 points.

Campbell received 41 points off the bench tonight, thanks in large part to Zurliene and Van Der Heijden's contributions.

The Fighting Camels head to Long Island next week for a pair of games against Stony Brook on Thursday and Hofstra on Saturday.
