Abraham named wide receivers coach

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Bryson Abraham has joined Campbell's football coaching staff, announced today by head coach Braxton Harris.

Abraham, coming to Buies Creek from Valdosta State, will serve as Passing Game Coordinator while coaching the Fighting Camels' wide receivers. In addition to the 2024 season with the Blazers, Abraham has also logged coaching stops at Jackson State, Texas State, Presbyterian, Louisiana Tech, as well as Ruston High School.

In 2024 Abraham served as pass game coordinator, director of player development and wide receivers coach with the NCAA Division II top-ranked Blazers.

Abraham helped Valdosta State to a 13-1 season and an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship game under head coach Tremaine Jackson, the 2024 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National Division II Coach of the Year.

Under Abraham's tutelage, three Blazer receivers earned All-Gulf South Conference accolades, including first team honoree Rodney Bullard, who gathered 1,001 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, as well as Tyler Ajiero and Graeson Malashevich, who took second team nods. Valdosta State, meanwhile, ranked in the NCAA Division II top-25 of several offensive categories, including scoring offense (40.1, eighth nationally), total offense (448.6, 11th) and passing offense (248.0, 23rd).

Prior to Valdosta State, Abraham coached wideouts at Jackson State in 2023, helping the Tigers to a seven win season while owning the SWAC's top-ranked offense at 389.5 yards per game, finishing second in the conference in passing offense at 227.6 yards per game. Abraham coached Fabian McCray, who finished third in the SWAC in receiving yards (584) and fifth in receiving yards per game at 53.1, while averaging 3.7 receptions per game for fifth in the league.

Abraham spent three seasons at Texas State (2020-22) where he coached Ashytn Hawkins to Second Team All-Sun Belt honors (2022), posting four 100-yard receiving games in nine contests and set the school-record for receptions in a game with 13 at Baylor. Marcell Barbee also earned Third Team All-Sun Belt honors in 2022 and was second in the SBC with 10 touchdown catches, leading the team with 40 catches for 584 yards. First-Team All-America return specialist Jeremiah Haydel caught 40 passes for 408 yards and four touchdowns. Haydel ranked third nationally and led the Sun Belt in combined kick return yards with 687 yards as one of only two NCAA Division I FBS players to return a kickoff and punt for a touchdown.

Before Texas State, he coached a pair of All-Big South wide receivers over two seasons at Presbyterian. Keith Pearson earned Second-Team All-Big South honors after leading the Big South with 71 receptions for 777 yards and three touchdowns. His 71 receptions set a PC single-season record, and his 777 receiving yards were the second-highest Division I total at the school. Pearson also became the school's eighth Division I player to record 100 career receptions and the seventh DI player to eclipse 1,000 career receiving yards. In his first season, Abraham had two receivers tie for second among Big South leaders with 52 receptions. DaShawn Davis recorded 557 receiving yards and led the Blue Hose with seven touchdown receptions. Pearson had 565 receiving yards and two TD receptions.

He also coached cornerbacks at Ruston High School in Ruston, La., in 2017, beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant defensive coach at Louisiana Tech after taking part in a 2016 minicamp with the Detroit Lions.

As a student-athlete at Louisiana Tech, Abraham was a Second-Team All-Conference USA and Second-Team All-Louisiana selection as a defensive back in 2015. He led the nation with four defensive touchdowns and three interceptions returned for touchdowns.

Abraham collected 156 tackles, including 113 solo, eight interceptions, 22 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a blocked kick throughout his career.  He played on two Bulldog teams that won the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl in 2014 and the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in 2015. He also played in the 2011 Poinsettia Bowl.

A native of Jennings, La., Abraham graduated from Louisiana Tech in 2014 with a degree in Psychology. He has a son, Kayson.
