Camels down Drexel in CAA opener

BUIES CREEK - Colby Duggan turned in the first double-double of his career to help carry Campbell to a 57-54 win over Drexel to open CAA play. Duggan posted 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in the win.

Campbell improves to 6-8, 1-0 in the CAA while Drexel drops to 8-6, 0-1.

The dramatic CAA opener featured 17 lead changes with no lead larger than nine, and Campbell never led by more than three. The Camels led for only 6:34 of the contest.

The Camels offense felt a bit disjointed in the first half with 10 turnovers leading to 12 points for Drexel in the opening 20 minutes. Despite the turnovers, Campbell weathered the storm with five first-half threes to trail just 31-27 at the break.

Campbell cleaned things up coming out of the break and turned the ball over only three times in the second half. Duggan scored 14 of his 19 in the second half, including back-to-back and-ones amid nine straight points scored by the sophomore.

Jasin Sinani hit the biggest shot of the night, a rainbow three from the right wing, to take Campbell from down one to up two with just under a minute to go and give Campbell the lead for good. Drexel's Yame Butler hit one of two at the stripe with a chance to tie it, and Cam Gregory hit both ends of the one-and-one with nine seconds left to put Campbell up three.

Shane Blakeney got up a three to tie as time expired but drew only iron as Campbell held on to win 57-54.

In addition to Duggan's big night, Sinani added 14 and six rebounds. Gregory added 9 points while Dorsey had six points and seven rebounds.

Drexel was led by Kobe MaGee with 15 points, while Cole Hargrove and Jason Drake added 12 and 11, respectively..

The win marks Campbell's first win over Drexel in a series that began only last season in Philadelphia, and are now 1-1 all-time against the Dragons.

Campbell plays its next three games on the road, starting with a trip to Wilmington Saturday at 7 p.m. That game will be broadcast on FloHoops.
