Camels roll past Tribe in historic win

BUIES CREEK - Campbell turned in a historic victory with a 96-55 over William & Mary, who entered the night in first place in the CAA, Thursday night in Gore Arena. The win was Campbell's largest home win ever over a D1 opponent, second-largest ever against a conference foe, and largest against a D1 opponent in the Kevin McGeehan era.

The win gets Campbell to 11-11, 6-3 in the CAA, while William & Mary drops to 13-9, 7-2 in the league.

Campbell has now won four in a row, three of those games by 23+. Over the last four games, Campbell is outscoring its opponents by an average of 22.5 points per game.

It was all Campbell through the first 20 minutes, as the Camels simultaneously rained threes and shut down the Tribe offense to build a 21-point halftime lead. Campbell splashed seven triples while William & Mary made only four field goals and went 1-13 from distance.

The lead was built largely by a 16-1 Campbell run across roughly seven minutes. Caleb Zurliene led all scorers with 12 at the half.

Despite the big lead, it turned out Campbell's offense was just getting going, as the Camels exploded for 58 points to keep running away with it in the second half. Campbell shot 58% after halftime and knocked down seven more threes after the break for a season-high 14 on the night. Wesley Johnson came off the bench to play the final four minutes and turned in a career-high five points. His final bucket, a three-pointer, capped the scoring and pushed the final margin back over 40 again.

Campbell led the first-place Tribe for more than 36 minutes, with the lead only changing once when Campbell went ahead 4-2, never trailing again.

Five Camels finished in double figures, led by 17 from Zurliene. Jasin Sinani and Nolan Dorsey each added 15, while Colby Duggan and Eric Van Der Heijden each had 13. Van Der Heijden posted the first double-double of his career with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with five assists. Dorsey just missed a double-double of his own with nine rebounds.

The Tribe finished shooting only 26% on the night and 12% from three. The Tribe were busy at the foul line, going 26-37. Campbell capitalized on its chances there, going 20-22 at the stripe.

Campbell has hit 10+ threes in each of the last three games for the first time this season. The 35 made threes in the last three games are the most in a three-game stretch since Jan. 24-Feb. 2, 2019, Chris Clemons' final season, when the Camels hit 40 over three games.

Campbell returns to action Saturday with a rematch against Hofstra after a dramatic overtime victory on Long Island last weekend. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. on FloCollege.
