Camels play to 2-2 draw against Charleston

BUIES CREEK — Campbell women's soccer scored a pair of goals less than 20 minutes into the match but Charleston responded with two unanswered goals to play to a 2-2 draw on Sunday at Shea family Fields.

Campbell moves to 4-5-4 overall and 2-2-2 in CAA play while Charleston is now 7-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.

Ella Wineka put the Camels out in front in just the second minute of the match off the assist by Mia Fairchild. The goal marks the fastest goal scored for the Camels this season and is the second goal of the season for Wineka.

Ava Kanaar doubled the Camels lead, 2-0, after finding the back of the net in the 15th minute of the match. The goal is the second of the season for Kanaar.

Charleston would go on to score a pair of unanswered goals. The Cougars began to cut into the deficit with just under five minutes left in the first half as Sienna Petro made it 2-1.

The Cougars would go on to tally the equalizer in the 66th minute off the boot of Avery Nassetta.

Anaïs van Doesburg returned to the starting lineup, making her 10th start of the season for the Camels. She notched a career high ten saves and is the first Camel to register 10+ saves since Reaghan Duval tallied 12 against Winthrop on Sept. 18, 2019.

The Camels were outshot 18-8 on the night and were called offsides eight times.

Abby Connolly and Kanaar each tallied a pair of shots to lead the team, Connolly's two shots were both on goal.

Head Coach Jeff Gross Quotable
"This team continues to learn rapidly and apply themselves. We play matches and learn lessons and in later matches the lessons are applied. Going up 2-0 on the road against a playoff caliber team is a positive step. We will learn from the result and brush ourselves off and go again. These players are disappointed bu we will use this as fuel. I am a very proud coach! Roll Humps!"
