BUIES CREEK, N.C. – New Hampshire used a pair of fourth quarter scores to edge Campbell 24-10 on Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Wildcats (4-4, 2-2 CAA) and Camels (2-6, 2-2 CAA) battled to a one score game until Matt Vezza's six-yard touchdown run with 1:48 to play, handing Campbell its first Homecoming loss 2021.
UNH led 6-3 at the half after Nick Reed's 50-yard field goal, his second make of the day, and Reed extended the lead with a third kick, this time a 37-yarder, to make it 9-3 with 11:20 on the clock in the third.
Campbell then answered with a four-play, 75-yard drive, with a 48-yard
Mike Chandler II pass to
Daniel Lopes, setting up a
JJ Cowan nine-yard TD run to give the Camels their first lead of the day, 10-9.
Reed lined up for a fourth field goal try on the ensuing possession, a 16-play, 74-yard march that erased 9:00 of clock, but the kick was blocked by CU's
Brandon Guzman, coming off the left edge to maintain the lead at the end of the third quarter.
Campbell's next three drives, however, netted nine total yards, while UNH used another nine-play drive, going 57 yards in 4:29 with Vezza's four-yard touchdown pass to Myles Thomason, set up by a 42-yard pass to Caleb Burke, put the Wildcats in front 17-10 with 8:30 to play before Vezza's clinching TD run.
Vezza completed 24-of-40 passes for 230 yards and a TD, adding 60 yards on the ground with another score. Burke grabbed six passes for a team-high 85 yards, while Chase Wilson added nine catches for 76 yards, and Thomason tacked on 17 carries for 75 yards for the Wildcats.
Defensively, Cole Bullock totaled seven tackles for UNH, while Jordan Mcallister made three stops, including 2.5 tackles for loss.
Cowan paced Campbell with 13 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown, while Chandler completed 8-of-11 passes for 133 yards while running for 28 yards. Lopes also made three catches for a game-high 88 yards.
Donavan Philord also notched seven tackles, including 1.0 for loss with a pass breakup, while
DaVonyae Pettis recorded six tackles and a sack.
Logan Livermon added 2.0 tackles for loss for the Camels.
Next week, the Camels will head to in-state CAA foe North Carolina A&T for a 1:00 p.m. matchup in Greensboro, N.C. Campbell returns home on November 8, hosting William & Mary (2:00 p.m.).
