Men's Basketball Stan Cole

Tales from the Creek | Don Whaley

Basketball All-American had tryouts in the NBA and NFL

Fifty-two years ago, Don Whaley stepped on the Campbell College campus for the fall semester in 1973.

By the time he graduated four years later, he had played a major role for a national powerhouse Fighting Camel squad.  He helped lead the Camels to 71 victories over his final three seasons, a runner-up finish in the 1977 NAIA national tournament, and was named All-American.

But Don didn't arrive at Campbell as a one-sport star.  He earned letters in four sports at South Lenoir High School and after graduating from Campbell, had NBA and NFL tryouts.

It's no surprise that Don is one of five inductees associated with the 1977 NAIA runner-up in the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame.

In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Fighting Camel basketball star and Hall of Fame member Don Whaley talks with Stan Cole about growing up in Eastern North Carolina, his path to Campbell, and much more.
