BUIES CREEK — An own goal with under two minutes left in the match lifted Campbell past William & Mary, 1-0, on Thursday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.
Campbell (4-3-3, 2-1-1 CAA) picked up its second conference victory in the defense battle to move to 2-1-1 in CAA play as William & Mary picked up its first conference loss to fall to 1-1-2 in conference action.
The Camels drew a foul before
Abygaelle Normand set up for the free kick just outside the box on the right wing and punted it towards the goal as a William & Mary defender would head the ball into its own net to give the Camels victory.
The first half was much of a defensive battle between the squads as the team combined for just five shots in the first.
The Tribe picked up its offensive pressure in the second half with 11 shots taken to the Camels four. The action would heat up in the final two minutes of the match after the own goal as the Tribe tried to find the equalizer but Campbell held strong on the defensive front.
JLo Varada made her second consecutive start earning her second complete sheet of the season. She was steady in goal with three saves in 13 shots faced.
Campbell managed to fend off seven corner kicks from the Tribe in the second half as it only took five in the match. The two squads registered 11 fouls each and
Gillian Garrison was issued a yellow card.
