Camels defeat Spartans in final non-conference action

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels matched last season's win total of eight, defeating USC Upstate, 3-2, Tuesday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

Three different goal scorers provided the offense for Campbell (8-4-4), who was outshot by USC Upstate (4-10-1), 22-15. The win is Campbell's first of the season when being outshot.

Lotem Ben Dov opened the scoring in the fifth minute to give CU an early advantage. Daniel Santos Rosa sent in a ball from the right side to the far post, and Luc Lavielle got on the end of it and sent it back across the face of goal. Ben Dov was first to it and had a clear net to place it home.

The Camels have scored first in all their wins this year and have an 8-1 record when doing so.

Upstate leveled the match in the 19th minute with a goal from Oskar Kaufmann, who took advantage of a misplay from the Campbell defense and took advantage of his one-on-one opportunity.

Ethan Roberts restored the Campbell advantage with a penalty kick goal in the 53rd minute, after Sam Roberson was fouled in the box. The goal is Roberts's sixth of the season to lead the team

Roberson added his own name to the scorecard in the 58th minute. After the Campbell defense parried a Spartan opportunity, Filipe Matos played the ball behind the Upstate defensive line on the counterattack.

Roberson was just onside and first to the ball, dribbling into the box and firing the shot past the keeper to the near post to create the two-goal advantage. It's his second goal of the year and first game-winner.

The Spartans scored their second in the 79th minute by way of Caedon Reynolds, who was assisted by Luke Marin and Mikey Gropper.

Max Leviton and Jesus Rondon played all 90 minutes in goal for each squad, coming away with two saves apiece. Campbell created five corner kick opportunities to two from Upstate, and each team was shown three yellow cards.
