BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell moved into first place in the CAA South Division with a 2-1 win over Elon, Saturday night at Eakes Athletics Complex. Â
Â
Ethan Roberts and
Filipe Matos provided the goal scoring to lift the Camels (9-4-4, 4-1-2) to 14 points in conference play. The Phoenix (6-3-6, 3-1-3) sits at 12 points after suffering its first loss in CAA play.
Â
The Camels have scored multiple goals in 11 matches this season and seven of the last eight. On the other hand, this is the first match all season Elon has allowed multiple goals.
Â
Roberts converted a free kick from just outside the box in the 17
th minute to open the scoring. It's the 10
th match of the season the Camels have scored first, and they move to a 9-1 record in such matches. Roberts also extended his team-leading goal count to seven, tied for third in the conference.
Â
Matos extended the Campbell lead to two in the 56
th minute.
Marco Wright began the move on the left side and passed it to
Skyler Wright at the right corner of the six-yard box. He sent a tight angle shot at the near post that ricocheted off the cross bar, where Matos was first to the rebound and headed it home.
Â
Elon scored on a Martin Kozak penalty kick with 1:20 remaining but was stymied by the Campbell defense in the final push to find an equalizer.
Â
CU's defense proved solid on the night, allowing the penalty kick as the only shot on goal out of seven attempts from the Phoenix.
Â
The Camels outshot the Phoenix 12-7, forcing three saves out of Elon goalkeeper Jackson Leavitt. Elon held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Â
While now in first place, the Camels have yet to clinch a seed in the CAA Tournament. CU will clinch the No. 1 seed in the south division with a win or draw against UNCW on Wednesday but could fall to third depending on how results shake out across the final two match days.
