Camels top Stony Brook in five sets

BUIES CREEK – The Camels remained unbeaten in five-set matches this season, winning a five-set thriller over Stony Brook Friday afternoon on Long Island. Four Camels logged double-digit kills to pace a balanced offense in a back-and-forth match.
 
Campbell improves to 15-5, 7-2 in the CAA, along with 4-0 in five-setters. Stony Brook drops to 8-10, 4-5 in league play.
 
The Camels fell behind by five points early and never climbed out of that hole, dropping the first set 25-21. Campbell got close and trailed by just one at 20-19 but couldn't complete the first-frame comeback.
 
Campbell battled to even the score with a 25-23 second set. In a flip of the first, Campbell led most of the set but it was the Seawolves battling back late. The Camels trailed 23-22 before rattling off a 3-0 run thanks to kills from Wolkow and Tupy to close it out.
 
The Camels really found their groove in the third set, taking it 25-7 to tie the largest set win of the season. Campbell put together a massive 18-2 run to balloon the lead from 7-4 to 21-6. Campbell hit .522 in the set, and held Stony Brook to -0.069.
 
The Seawolves rallied in the fourth to roll past Campbell 25-16 in the frame and force a deciding set. After the red-hot third set, Campbell hit just .081 in the fourth.
 
Campbell jumped out to a quick 5-1 advantage in the fifth but saw that quickly erased as Stony Brook later led 12-10. Campbell got contributions from Tupy, Tuyo and Duong to set up match point which was put away by Wolkow for the 16-14 winner.
 
Victoria Tupy led the Camels with 16 kills on .652 hitting. Sixteen kills are one shy of her career-high, with .652 hitting good for a new career-best. Daca added 11 kills while Lambers and Wolkow added 10 each to join Tupy in double figures. .
 
Hailey Heytvelt put up seven blocks, one shy of her career high.
 
The Camels and Seawolves return to action Saturday at 1pm to wrap up the series. That match will again be streamed on FloCollege.
