Camels head to Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate

Four power conference teams in field at Knoxville

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the second-straight season, Campbell will compete in the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Tennessee next week at Cherokee CC in Knoxville, Tenn.
 
The 54-hole event will be held Sunday-Tuesday on the par-71 Donald Ross design that will play to 5990 yards.
 
Head coach John Crooks and associate head coach Val Patino will take a lineup to Knoxville that includes seniors Taylah Ellems and Isabella Hahne, junior Jade Potter, sophomore Fanni Gronlund and freshman Linn Svedlund.
 
Three Camels from last year's team that finished as runner-up in the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate will be in next week's lineup.  Hahne finished T26 (74-75-73—222), Ellems T44 (72-79-77—228) and Gronlund T58 (76-80-77—233) in last season's tournament.
 
Campbell will be paired with South Alabama and ETSU for Sunday's first round and start from the 10th tee at 10:45 a.m.

Format: 54 holes (18-18-18) with 9:30 a.m. double tee times Sunday and Monday, 9:15 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.
 
The Field: Campbell, Charlotte, Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, Florida International, Jacksonville State, Memphis, Mercer, Middle Tennessee, Oregon State, Penn State, South Alabama, Tennessee, Texas Christian, Western Kentucky.
 
The Course – Cherokee Country Club (Par 71, 5965 yards): Founded in 1907 and extended to 18 holes in 1910 by famed architect Donald Ross, Cherokee Country Club is nestled in a bend of the Tennessee River with sweeping view of the Smoky Mountains.  The course was redesigned over in the years, initially through Alex McKay in 1950 and Dan Maples made further revisions in 1985.  In 2000, Ron Prichard (Donald Ross restoration architect) was appointed to restore the course to its former glory. Prichard employed old aerial photographs, and the course was opened to play in 2008.  The club has played host to U.S. Open Qualifying and the Tennessee State Amateur.
 
The Coach: Now in his 35th year as head coach of the CU women and first as Director of Golf, John Crooks has been named league coach of the year 23 times in his tenure.  His teams have combined to earn 37 NCAA post-season trips, including 16 straight appearances for the men or women.  His teams have won 162 tournaments and with 100 career tournament titles, Crooks trails only Dan Brooks of Duke (143) on the all-time coaching victories list among Division I women's coaches.  He has guided his teams to 27 league titles, including 19 on the women's side and eight in men's competition (from 1990-2025).
 
The Lineup:
 
Sophomore Fanni Gronlund (Kirkkonummi, Finland) opened the season with a T12 showing (71-73—144) at the Tiger Classic and has finished among the top 30 individuals in each of her three outings.  She leads the team with a 72.4 stroke average and has played par, or better, golf five times through eight rounds.  She was named the 2025 CAA Rookie of the Year and WGCA All-America Scholar.  Over the summer, she won the Finnish U-21 stroke play national championship.  She has played par, or better, golf 11 times in her career, including a collegiate low 2-under 69 at the 2024 Golfweek Fall Challenge.
 
Red-shirt senior Taylah Ellems (Canberra, Australia) opened the season with her best collegiate finish (T6) at the Tiger Classic, where she matched her collegiate low in the second round (72-69—141).  She has compiled a 73.4 stroke average in the 2025-26 season with three rounds of par, or better, golf.  A member of the 2023 Big South all-freshman team, Ellems owns a 77.1 career stroke average over 19 events.
 
Junior Jade Potter (Edinburgh, Scotland) finished T35 at the Golfweek Fall Challenge (75-74-70—219), where she shot a collegiate low, 1-under 70 in the final round.  She owns a 75.4 scoring average through three events.  Potter shot back-to-back 73s at the 2025 CAA Championship after entering the lineup for the second round.  She earned her best collegiate finish (T22) last spring at the City of Oaks Collegiate.
 
Senior Isabella Hahne (Kungsbacka, Sweden) has produced seven top-10 finishes in 33 career outings with 25 par, or better, rounds.  Hahne finished T10 (73-70—143) at the season-opening Tiger Classic before posting a T21 effort (70-71-76—217) at the Golfweek Fall Challenge. She owns a 75.4 scoring average through three events this year with three rounds of par, or better, golf.   A WGCA All-America Scholar and second-team All-CAA performer last season, Hahne was the individual runner-up in 2024 at The Southern (71-72-72).  She won the Sea Best Intercollegiate at San Jose CC in 2023 when she was named Big South freshman of the year.
 
Freshman Linn Svedlund (Uppsala, Sweden) will compete in her third collegiate tournament next week at Knoxville.  In her collegiate debut at the Tiger Classic, Svedlund finished T42 (83-72—155) and was 3-under over her last 23 holes.  She has posted a 77.0 scoring average over five rounds.  Svedlund compiled one victory and nine top 10 finishes in 14 World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) events. She was ranked sixth among Swedish U18 girls.
 
Next: Following the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate, Campbell will compete Oct. 27-28 in the Edisto Island Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston at the Plantation Course in Edisto Island, S.C.
