BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the first time in six years, Campbell heads back to the Rocky Mountains next week to compete in the Golfweek Red Sky Classic at Wolcott, Colo.
The 18-team event will be held Monday-Wednesday (Sept. 22-24) at the Red Sky Golf Club Fazio Course (elevation 7,880) and includes nine teams – Arizona, Campbell, Denver, Kansas, LSU, Miami, Pepperdine, Sacramento State, Southern Cal – that advanced to NCAA Regional competition last spring.
The Camels opened the season with a fifth-place finish at the Clemson Tiger Classic before tying for seventh in the 20-team field at the Golfweek Fall Challenge.
Head coach
John Crooks and associate head coach Val Patino will take a lineup to Colorado that includes three seniors (
Taylah Ellems,
Izabella Grimbrandt and
Isabella Hahne), a junior (
Jade Potter) and one sophomore (
Fanni Gronlund).
Next week's visit to the Mountain time zone marks Campbell's ninth to Red Sky. CU has five top-five finishes in the event, including a third-place effort in 2017, but has not played at Red Sky since 2019. From 2009-2019 the event was named the Golfweek Conference Challenge, with a field featuring teams (one per) from different NCAA Division I conferences. Since 2021, the tournament has been known as the Golfweek Red Sky Classic.
Golfweek Red Sky Classic
Red Sky GC Fazio Course | Par 72, 6309 Yards
Wolcott, Colo. | Sept. 22-24, 2025
Live Scoring: Golfstat.com
Format: 54 holes (18-18-18) with 10:00 a.m. (MDT) double tee times Monday and Tuesday, 9:15 a.m. shotgun start Wednesday.
The Field: Arizona, Arkansas-Little Rock, Boise State, Cal-Irvine,
Campbell, Charlotte, Denver, Eastern Michigan, East Tennessee State, Jacksonville State, Kansas, Louisiana State, Mercer, Miami, New Mexico State, UNC Asheville, Northern Arizona, Pepperdine, Sacramento State, Southern Cal.
The Course - Red Sky Golf Club – Fazio Course (Par 72, 6309 yards): Tom Fazio's design measures 7113 yards and will play to 6309 for the Red Sky Classic. It merges spectacular vistas of Vail's Back Bowls with a variety of terrain. Players make their way through open sage-covered hills, dense aspen forest and around a highland lake. Fazio's design team took particular care to maintain the site's indigenous vegetation, relocating more than 23,000 native plants into nurseries for re-planting throughout the course.
"Red Sky is unlike any golf course anywhere in the world I've visited," said head coach John Crooks. "The view from every tee box is spectacular and the weather can change at any time. It's a beautiful time of the year to be out there because the colors are changing, and the ball travels so far, which can be good news and bad news. High desert golf has its own challenges and the field in this event changes each year. It's a privilege to once again receive an invitation to play in this event. Everything about it is first class."
The Coach: Now in his 35th year as head coach of the CU women and first as Director of Golf,
John Crooks has been named league coach of the year 23 times in his tenure. His teams have combined to earn 37 NCAA post-season trips, including 16 straight appearances for the men or women. His teams have won 162 tournaments and with 100 career tournament titles, Crooks trails only Dan Brooks of Duke (143) on the all-time coaching victories list among Division I women's coaches. He has guided his teams to 27 league titles, including 19 on the women's side and eight in men's competition (from 1990-2025).
