Tales from the Creek | Jim Gurkin

All-American and Hall of Fame member shares his story

Jim Gurkin arrived at Campbell from Little Washington in the fall of 1965 and before he finished, earned All-America honors and helped establish the Fighting Camels as a national golf powerhouse.

Under the direction of coaches Danny Roberts, Jimmy and his teammates established a golf dynasty in Buies Creek – even before Keith Hills golf club was built in 1974 and the athletic teams transitioned to the Division I ranks.

Jimmy and his teammate Sam Brewer became the first Camels to earn All-America honors in golf in 1969 when the Camels finished fifth in the NAIA national tournament.

Since graduation, Jimmy has worked as a golf professional for more than four decades, making stops in Raleigh, Henderson and Wilson.

In the next episode of Tales from the Creek, Fighting Camel golf All-American and Hall of Fame member Jim Gurkin talks with Stan Cole about growing up in Eastern North Carolina, his path to Campbell, a career in golf and much more.
