BUIES CREEK – A big second half led the Fighting Camels (2-2) to a 108-53 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian Thursday night inside Gore Arena. The 53-point victory is the fourth largest in Campbell's DI era.
Campbell's 108 points were two shy of the Gore Arena record set in 2016, and the most since 2020.
Dovydas Butka stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points and 16 rebounds. His 16 boards tie the arena record, and are the most by any Camel since Darren White's 16 in 2012.
The Camels made the most of their size advantage in the opening 20 minutes shooting 27 free throws and hauling in 12 offensive rebounds. Even then, it took Campbell more than 10 minutes to create some breathing room, not pushing ahead by double digits until three minutes remained in the half, ultimately leading 49-32 at the break thanks to a late run.
Campbell bottled the late momentum into the second half, quickly pushing the lead to 30 just six minutes into the half. It was all Campbell from there, en route to the 53 point victory. Campbell outscored the Mustangs 59-23 in the second, with
Cam Gregory leading the way with 12.
DJ Smith led the way with 27 points including 12-12 at the charity stripe. The point guard raised his season scoring average to 22.5 while dishing out a season-best six assists against just one turnover.
All ten Camels that took the floor scored, with five Camels finishing in double figures. In addition to Smith's 27,
Jeremiah Johnson finished with 19 on 5-7 FG and 8-10 at the line. Gregory finished with 14 points, and Butka and
Chris Fields Jr. with 12 apiece.
Campbell finished with a 55-22 advantage on the glass, one rebound shy of the arena record.
Campbell now heads into its longest layoff of the young season, back in action next Wednesday night at Weber State in the first game of the Junction City Jam in Ogden, Utah. Tip-off in Ogden is slated for 10pm ET, 8pm MT.
