OGDEN, UTAH – Campbell cut a 21-point deficit to just one, but couldn't complete the comeback in a 91-85 loss at Weber State Wednesday night.
The loss drops Campbell to 2-3 on the young season.
DJ Smith led the scoring with 22 points, his fourth 20-point performance in five outings this year.
Dovydas Butka turned in his second straight double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, along with a team-high three assists.
A pair of Weber State runs around halftime proved to be the difference, with a 12-2 run going into the break and a 13-4 run coming out of it.
The Camels were scoring easily early on, piling up 25 points in the first 10 minutes and change of the contest. The offense slowed late in the half and allowed Weber State to close the first half on a 12-2 run across the final 2:30 and carry a 45-37 lead into the break. Smith, Johnson, and Fields all had nine points in the first half for the Camels.
The run continued coming out of halftime, as Weber State's lead eventually ballooned to 21 points with under 10 minutes to play. Campbell got things going offensively again and began chipping away. A 7-0 run from Smith alone cut the lead to single digits, and the Camels later made it a one point game with under a minute to go, but ran out of time to complete the comeback.
Campbell's second half scoring came primarily at the foul line, connecting on 23 free throws.
Campbell shot a stellar 28-31 at the foul line, but struggled from behind the three point line going 3-16.
Chris Fields Jr. logged his best scoring performance for the Camels with 18 points. Jeremiah Johson finished with 15 to round out four Camels in double figures along with Smith and Butka.
Five Wildcats finished in double figures, led by 23 from Tijan Saine Jr.
The Camels will stick around in Ogden for a matchup with UT Arlington Friday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 3pm ET/1pm MT on ESPN+.
