Camels drop contest with Northern Colorado in overtime

CHICAGO, Ill. – Campbell dropped its first game of the WellNow Blue Demon Classic, falling to Northern Colorado, 68-62, in overtime Friday afternoon at Wintrust Arena.

The Bears (4-1) outscored the Fighting Camels (3-3) 12-6 in the extra period, led by Aniah Hall going 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Hall scored a game-high 20 points, 10 of which came from the charity stripe. Tatum West scored two of her 18 points in overtime, and Gabi Fields added the other four.

CU started slow, falling behind 8-0 with four turnovers in the first 2:30. Hadleigh Dill gave the Camels their first lead of the game at 15-14 with 7:30 left in the second quarter with two straight three-pointers.

Four Camels scored in double figures, led by Dill's 11. Felton added 10, along with Jasmine Nivar and Ciara Alexander.

Campbell's defense picked up in the second half, forcing the Bears into six turnovers in the frame and 5-of-14 from the field.

The Camels also played smart on the defensive side in the first half, not allowing UNC to take any free throws through the first 20 minutes. Jasmine Felton added a career-high three blocks, including one on the final shot of the half.

A back-and-forth third quarter saw the Camels holding on to a 41-40 lead going to the fourth. Northern Colorado took the lead back early in the fourth quarter, but Nivar was fouled on a three-point attempt with 7:39 to play and made all three to tie it at 46-all.

The teams battled back and forth until a three pointer from Olivia Tucker put the Camels up by two with 1:38 to play.

Nivar made two free throws to put her team up by four with 38 seconds to play, but West and Hall combined to put the Bears on a 5-1 run over the final half minute to tie the game at 56. Nivar put up a shot from the paint in the final seconds but could not convert.

The Bears separated in overtime at the foul line, making six of their 10 attempts, all from Hall.
