Camels bounce back with win over Grambling State, 67-51

CHICAGO, Ill. – Jasmine Nivar recorded her first career double-double, and the Camels bounced back with a 67-51 win over Grambling State as part of the WellNow Blue Demon Classic, Saturday afternoon at Wintrust Arena.
 
Campbell (4-3) fell one shot short of shooting 50% as a team, ending the contest 25-of-51 from the field. CU finished with nine more turnovers than the Tigers (1-6) but allowed just one more point off of those turnovers.
 
The Tigers forced Campbell into six turnovers in the first quarter, building a 19-17 lead off of five points each from Zaria Johnson and Arianna Mosley.
 
CU created the separation with a 20-2 second quarter, forcing eight turnovers and holding the Tigers to 0-of-8 from the field during the frame.
 
On the offensive side during the frame, Olivia Tucker scored seven points, Gianni Boone added six, and the team scored nine points in the final 1:36 to take a 16-point halftime advantage, 37-21.
 
Campbell controlled the boards for the game, outrebounding Grambling 42-28. The Tigers came into the contest as the 11th best team in the country in offensive rebounds, but the Camels held them under their average by over five boards.
 
Jasmine Nivar opened the second half with four quick points to put the Camels ahead by 20 at the 8:41 mark of the third quarter.
 
D'Mya Griffin hit a three-pointer at the 5:31 mark of the third quarter for Grambling's first field goal since the final two seconds of the first quarter, as the team went over 14 minutes of gametime without making a shot from the field.
 
Griffin followed with a second three on the next possession to cap an 8-0 run for the Tigers, cutting the Camel lead to 13, 42-29.
 
Campbell's defense walled up yet again, not allowing Grambling to score in the final three minutes of the frame while the Camels added six points to build the lead back to 16, 48-32.
 
Campbell built the lead back to start the fourth, going up by 21 with a Tucker three-pointer at the 7:44 mark.
 
Shaniah Dunn scored Grambling's first nine points in the fourth quarter beginning at the 6:42 mark, and she scored all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter.
 
The Camels used a balanced attack in the fourth, with Boone being the only player to score four points. With her two rebounds in the fourth, Nivar recorded her first career double-double, ending the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The teams matched each other in the second half, with both teams scoring 11 points in the third and 19 points in the fourth.
 
UP NEXT
Campbell travels to Jacksonville, Fla., for next weekend's Osprey Thanksgiving Classic hosted by North Florida. The Camels will face off against North Dakota State on Friday beginning at 11:00 a.m., before taking on North Florida on Saturday.
