TOWSON, MD. – The Campbell Fighting Camels claimed their first CAA Championship with a 3-2 thriller over top-seeded Hofstra Saturday night inside SECU Arena. The Camels will be heading to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history, and first since 2021.
The Camels, picked 10
th of 11 in CAA preseason poll, pulled off the first double in program history as regular season and tournament champions.
The Camels now await their destination in the NCAA tournament. The selection show is slated for Sunday, Nov. 30, with the first round on Dec. 4.
Gwen Wolkow was tabbed tournament MVP with 23 kills in the final, just one shy of her career best, along with 12 digs and three blocks.
Maja Daca turned in 29 kills in the two matches, 14 tonight, to earn all-tournament team.
Aley Clent also earned all-tournament honors with 15 total blocks in the tournament and the final kill of tonight's match.
The three-hour match ultimately saw Campbell hold off three match points and improve to 7-0 in five-set matches this season.
Campbell took the first set before surrendering the next two to Hofstra to trail 2-1 and in need of some magic. Backed into a corner, the Camels had to hold off three match points in the fourth set trailing 24-21, but stormed back with a 5-0 run to steal the fourth 26-24 and keep the dream alive.
The Camels, who entered the night 6-0 in fifth sets this season, were strong again when it mattered most and secured the title with a 15-12 final set. Wolkow flexed her first-team all-CAA talents and put up five kills on six swings in the final set to power the Camels through the deciding frame. It was another senior, Clent, that put the finishing touches on the title with a ball to the back right corner that found the hardwood and sent the Camels to the Big Dance.
Wolkow finished the night with a team-best 23 kills to lead the Camels. Daca added 14 and Heytvelt had 10.
It was the defense that ultimately got things done for the Camels with 10 total blocks and 77 total digs, four Camels finishing with 10+ digs.
The Camels now lay claim to three championship seasons, the 2021 Big South tournament champions, the 2022 Big South regular season title, and the 2025 CAA regular season + tournament champions. All three championship teams have been led by this year's CAA Coach of the Year
Greg Goral, who picked up career wins 200 & 201 in the postseason.
