MORGANTOWN, WV – The Fighting Camels came up just short at West Virginia in a game that came down to the wire, 73-65. The Mountaineers led the whole way, but never by more than 10 points.
Campbell falls to 0-2 after the first road trip of the season. West Virginia improves to 2-0.
The Camels struggled to shoot the ball, going 35% from the floor and 16% (2-14) from distance but found ways to hang in the game. Campbell outrebounded WVU 40-36 and forced 11 turnovers leading to 12 points. Campbell also bested the hosts in the paint 34-26.
Campbell shot just 29% from the floor and 12% from three in the first half, but managed to keep it a single digit game at the break, trailing 33-25.
Cam Gregory led the Camels with nine points in the opening 20 minutes, knocking down Campbell's only triple of the first half.
The Camels played the second half even with the Mountaineers, cutting the lead to just one point, and keeping it single digits the remainder of the half.
Jeremiah Johnson scored 12 of his 13 in the second half, while
DJ Smith scored all 11 of his points after the break.
Campbell trailed by only four with 1:30 to play, but failed to get a defensive stop and never drew closer as WVU was steady at the foul line down the stretch.
Chris Fields Jr. posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, His 15 boards are the most by a Camel since Andrew Eudy hauled in 15 during 2019 season.
Dovydas Butka led Campbell in scoring with 14 to pace four Camels in double figures.
West Virginia got its biggest contribution from Honor Huff's 23 points to lead all scorers. Five Mountaineers finished with double figures.
The Camels return to Buies Creek for the home opener Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against Western Michigan. That game will be broadcast on FloCollege.
