BUIES CREEK – The Fighting Camels (1-2) picked up their first win of the season with a 91-82 victory over Western Michigan (1-2) in the home opener Sunday afternoon. The win marks the first victory of head coach
John Andrzejek's coaching career.
DJ Smith led the way with a career-high 29 thanks to going 6-12 from downtown. He led a hot shooting night for the Camels who connected on 12 triples at a 43% clip.
Cam Gregory put the Camels on top early with a three-pointer less than two minutes in, and the Camels never trailed again, leading for more than 38 minutes.
Campbell turned the ball over nine times in the first half, but made up for that with six three pointers and carried a 39-34 lead into the half.
The offense got rolling in the second half, putting up 52 points after the break. The duo of
DJ Smith and
Dovydas Butka filled it up, with Smith scoring 18 of his 29 and Butka with 17 of his 19 in the second half.
The Camels reached their largest lead of the night at 14 with under three minutes to play and cruised to the nine point win.
Campbell did its damage Sunday from a pair of lines, knocking down 12 three pointers and 29 free throws (29-41) Forty-one free throw attempts are the most by a Campbell team since the 2013 season.
Smith and Butka led five Camels in double figures, as Chris Fields Jr (15),
Tasos Cook (11) and
Jeremiah Johnson (10) all got there as well. Butka just missed a double-double, collecting a team-high nine rebounds as well.
The Camels were off and running all night, scoring 25 fast break points and 22 points off turnovers, thanks to coming up with nine steals and forcing 15 total turnovers.
Jalen Griffith led the effort for the Broncos with 19 points and seven assists.
Following three games in the opening week, the Camels now get three days off before hosting Barber-Scotia. Tip-off for that one is set for Thursday night at 7 p.m.
