Last Time Out: Campbell secured a 100-43 victory over Carolina University in front of a capacity crowd on Education Day Thursday afternoon. All 12 available players played over 10 minutes, and six Camels scored in double-figures.
Hadleigh Dill led CU with 13 points, while
Peris Smith set new career-highs with 10 points and six rebounds. It's the second time Campbell WBB has played in front of a capacity crowd at Gore Arena and the first time in 15 years.
Scouting the Opponent: The Spartans are coming off an Education Day win of their own, defeating Dillard 100-54 on Thursday. NSU has already matched up against three ranked opponents this season. After three consecutive MEAC titles, NSU was picked to finish second in the preseason poll. Da'Brya Clark leads the Spartans at 14.9 points per game. Coach Woods is in his first year at the helm after the previous head coach left for the same position at Auburn.
Quieting the Whistle: The Camels committed just four fouls against Carolina University, setting a new program record for fewest fouls in a contest.
Second Quarter Defense: CU is allowing 10.0 points in second quarters, including lows of 0 to Virginia-Lynchburg, 2 to Grambling State, and 4 to both Western Carolina and Carolina University. Only four teams have scored 13+ points against the Camels in the second frame.
The Camels are one of four teams to hold an opponent to 0 points in a quarter this season (CSUN, UCLA, Ohio State). Campbell is the only D1 team to hold four opponents to less than 5 points in any quarter.
Series History: The teams have matched up seven previous times, and the Spartans have won six of those games. Campbell's lone win in the series came on the road in 2019.
Felton on Fire: Jasmine Felton was nearly perfect against Mercer, going 7-of-8 from the field, 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 2-of-3 at the free throw line. Earlier in the year against Furman, Felton was unstoppable, going 8-of-11 from the field, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and 5-of-5 at the free throw line for a career-high 24 points. At 48.5% shooting on the year, she ranks fourth in the CAA.
Leading the Conference: The Camels are holding opponents to 55.5 points per game, the best mark in the CAA. Campbell is 2nd in the CAA in FG% defense, holding opponents to 35.6% shooting.
The squad is second in the league in field goal % (41.3), offensive rebounds per game (16.4), rebounding margin (6.1) and scoring margin (12.3).
CU is third in the league in scoring offense (67.8), turnover margin (3.09) and turnovers forced (19.64).
The team is top five in bench points, blocks, free throw attempts and rebounds.
Ciara Alexander leads the CAA in free throws attempts (53) and is second in rebounds (79).
Alexander ranks 2nd in the CAA and 21st in the country with 3.9 offensive rebounds per game.
National Nivar: Jasmine Nivar was named to the Tamika Catchings Award preseason watch list by the USBWA. She is one of 20 student athletes on the list and just one of two from a mid-major program.
Freshman 20-piece: Freshman
Jasmine Nivar led the Camels with 20 points against Tulane. She's the first freshman to score 20 points in a season opener at Campbell. She became just the fifth freshman since 2009 to score 20 points in any game.
Preseason Accolades: Senior
Gianni Boone was named to the preseason All-CAA First Team. The Camels, who finished last year as the CAA runner-up, were picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches' poll.
Impact Newcomers: Campbell welcomes a trio of freshmen to Buies Creek:
Keaton Rikard,
N'na Konate and
Jasmine Nivar. The team also brings in
Ashleigh Battle, a transfer from Eastern Florida State College.
A Summer Abroad: Konate and Nivar competed internationally this season. Konate participated with Switzerland at U20 Eurobasket, helping the Swiss to a 5-2 record in the tournament. Nivar played with the Puerto Rico U18 squad at GLOBL Jam.
Decade under Fisher: Head Coach
Ronny Fisher enters his 10
th season at the helm in Buies Creek. He has amassed a 180-108 record and has twice led Campbell to a program record 23 wins in a season.
