BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Freshman
Jasmine Nivar had her second 20-point game of the season, and the Camels scored 27 points in the fourth quarter on their way to defeating Norfolk State, 68-63, Monday Night at Gore Arena to remain perfect at home.
Â
27 points ties the most that Campbell has scored in a quarter this season with the opening quarter of the year against Tulane.
Â
Nivar scored 15 of her points in the fourth quarter, as Campbell (7-5) erased a nine-point deficit going into the final frame. The Spartans (5-8) extended their lead to 11 with the first bucket of the fourth quarter for their biggest lead of the game and the first double-digit fourth quarter comeback for the Camels this season.
Â
Jasha Clinton led the Spartans with 28 points, the most Campbell has allowed an opposing player this season. She played over 38 minutes, but committed four fouls in the fourth quarter and fouled out with 1:04 left in the game and the score tied at 63.
Â
Jasmine Felton made both of her free throw attempts from the foul to put the Camels ahead for good. In total, the Camels attempted 37 free throws and made 28, both season highs. In the fourth quarter, the team shot 13-of-16 at the line.
Â
N'na Konate followed with a block on the defensive end, and
Hadleigh Dill made both free throws on the ensuing possession with 11 seconds left to ice the game.
Â
Campbell also used the charity stripe in the first quarter to its advantage, going 5-of-8.
Ciara Alexander came out of the gate hot with nine points in the first, including her first two three-point makes of the season.
Â
Both teams saw early foul trouble, as Nivar, Carmen Kweti and Ciara Bailey each had two fouls after the first quarter. Nivar played a significant portion of the fourth quarter with four fouls, but Clinton was the only player to be disqualified.
Â
Norfolk State's defense picked up in the middle two quarters, forcing seven Campbell turnovers in each of the frames. Da'Brya Clark picked up the offense in the second quarter, dropping 10 points. Clinton followed with nine of her points in the third.
Â
NSU outscored the Camels by three in the second quarter, taking a 35-33 lead into the break. This marks Campbell's first win (1-4) this year after trailing at halftime.
Â
The Spartans came out strong after halftime, using an 8-0 run to help start the period outscoring the Camels 11-4. The Campbell offense struggled throughout the frame, going 1-of-10 from the field and 5-of-8 at the line.
Â
The offensive struggles did not continue into the fourth, as Nivar, Felton and Dill each played the entire quarter to power the offense. The trio combined for 24 of the 27 fourth-quarter points.
Â
Felton used a mini 5-0 run at the 4:00 minute mark of the fourth to tie the game at 58, and Konate immediately followed with a block on the defensive end, an offensive rebound which she turned into two free throws to cap a 10-0 run over the course of 2:20 to put the Camels on top with three minutes to go.
Â
Campbell outrebounded the Spartans, 43-36, moving to 7-1 on the season when outrebounding the opponents. The Camels took advantage of the offensive glass, outscoring the Spartans 16-3 on second chance points.
