STATE COLLEGE, PA. – Campbell (3-5) trailed by five points with less than two minutes to play, but couldn't pull the upset in a 87-76 loss at Penn State (9-1) Tuesday night.
Turnovers plagued the Camels for much of the contest, putting them in a hole they couldn't quite climb out of. Seventeen Campbell turnovers led to 13 steals and 22 points off turnovers for Penn State.
DJ Smith's shooting helped keep Campbell in it, knocking down five three-pointers en route to a team-high 19 points.
Dovydas Butka and
Chris Fields Jr. both just missed double-doubles, Butka with 15 points and 9 rebounds, and Fields with 11 and 8. The duo led Campbell to outrebound Penn State 39-30 on the night and beating PSU 15-2 in second chance points.
A back-and-forth first half saw the Camels trail 46-39 going into the break. Campbell made the most of its shots, shooting 57% from the floor, but 12 Campbell turnovers led to 16 points for Penn State. Smith led the Camels with 11 points at the half thanks to a trio of triples.
The Camels trailed by as many as 14 in the second half, but hung in the fight and cut that deficit to five with less than two minutes to go. The comeback effort was fueled by triples from Smith and Johnson, as well as cutting down on turnovers. After coughing it up 15 times in the first 29 minutes, Campbell turned it over just twice in the final 11 minutes of action.
The late run wasn't enough, as Campbell ultimately fell by a final tally of 87-76.
Campbell shot 45% from the floor and 34% from distance, but left points at the line, going just 10-19 from the stripe, a season low in both makes and percentage.
Jeremiah Johnson added 12 points, while
Muneer Newton finished with a productive seven points and seven rebounds.
The Camels now await their first home game since Nov. 13, hosting Virginia Lynchburg on Sunday Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. That game will be broadcast on FloCollege.
